In the last post in this series on Start your own blog, I gave you an assignment to think about the niche you want to blog in. Today, we will be looking at how to choose a profitable niche for your blog. Choosing a profitable niche for your blog could be a herculean task, because of the numerous available niches you can choose from.
You should be able to find and choose a profitable niche for your blog by considering the factors below.
1. Passion and Personal Interests
This is the first thing you need to consider when choosing a niche for your blog. What do you have passion for? What are your interests? What do you enjoy reading about? what do you like writing about? All these questions need to be answered before you can choose a niche for your blog.
You should start a blog based on what you are interested in because your passion will reflect in your writings. If you choose a niche you don’t have interest in, there is likely the blog won’t stand the test of time. Choose a niche you will be able to write on for the next 12 – 24 months if you want to build a professional blog.
Write down your interests. There is possibility that you have several unrelated interests, try to narrow them down and build your blog around your related interests.
2. Popularity
After you have solved the task of choosing a niche based on your interests and passion, you have to choose a popular niche. Because you won’t read your blog by yourself, you have to choose a niche that is popular among people.
You can use this free Google keyword suggestion tool by Seobook to check for what people are searching for on the Internet and build your blog around those popular niches that relate to your interests.
Note that all Internet users do not necessarily need to be interested in your blog but if a small fraction of people who use the Internet are searching for keywords related to your niche then you are ok.
3. Profitability
If you really want to make money from your blog, then you have to choose a niche that is profitable and easy to monetise. You can monetise your blogs using Ad Networks like Google adsense & Chitika. You can also sign-up for affiliate programs from Amazon.com, Commission Junction, Clickbank, etc. Read my post on 6 best ways to monetise your blog for more understanding.
You can use Google Adwords Traffic Estimator and Google Adwords Keyword Tool. These tools will give you an idea on how profitable your niche is.
4.Your Competitors
Are you ready to swim with the sharks? How prepared are you to face your competitors? This is a big factor to consider in determining what niche you want to blog in.
In as much as there are several niches available, some niches are less competitive than others. It is advisable to blog in a niche with less competition but If you know you have the confidence and the energy level to face your competitors then go for it. Try and study your competitors and improve on what they are not doing or what they are doing wrong.
In conclusion, considering the factors written above, It is possible you won’t find a niche that will satisfy all these conditions above. Choose a niche that you are passionate about; a niche you can afford to write about without being paid for; a niche that you can become an authority in a short time. Take your time to brainstorm and decide on which niche you want to blog about.

Could you tell me which is the best affiliate program between ClickBank and Commission Junction? Have you ever heard of Tatto media? This last one sounds great, and some say that it is better than Market Leverage.
Benjamin Cip’s last blog post..Make Money With The Clickbank Affiliate Program
Benjamin, Clickbank is the best affiliate program when it comes to digital products while Commission Junction leads when you talk about physical products. With Commission Junction you can choose from millions of products to promote from thousands of merchants on their platform.
I’m still trying out Tatto media. I will write about it soon.

Profiting from your blog is no simple task. Even if you have the right niche, interest and all other strategies something deeper must be developed in order to succeed. If you know what are those then you’ll stand among the rest.
